In a world full of noise and endless distractions, finding a daily practice that brings both calm and clarity can feel like a blessing. For me, that practice is drawing and painting. It is not about perfection, but about expression. Every page in my sketchbook becomes a place where I can slow down, think clearly, and let creativity take over.

When you draw every day, even for a few minutes, you train your mind to see the world differently. A simple still life, a quick portrait, or a sketch of a storefront you pass by often becomes more than a picture. It is an exercise in observation, patience, and mindfulness. These quiet moments with pen, ink, and watercolour are like meditation, helping you release stress and regain focus.

One of the most surprising benefits of sketching daily is the confidence it builds. With each line and brushstroke, you learn to trust your hand, your eye, and your instinct. At first, your sketches may feel clumsy, but over time they grow into something that reflects your unique voice. It is your world, after all. The more you practise, the more you realise that drawing is not about achieving perfection, but about enjoying the process.

For my own practice, I prefer a good quality watercolour art journal, usually 300 gsm. The thickness of the paper makes a big difference, as it handles water well without buckling. Many of these journals come in handy rectangular or square formats, which makes them easy to carry. I often slip mine into my bag when I go out. Whether I am in a café, sitting in a park, or travelling, I enjoy pulling it out to capture quick impressions of whatever catches my eye.

A waterproof ink pen is another essential. With it, I can make quick sketches and later add watercolour without worrying about smudges. From portraits to street corners, from old buildings to cups of coffee, the possibilities are endless. Once you start drawing regularly, you can begin experimenting with light and shadow, depth and contrast, the darkest darks and the brightest highlights. That is when you realise the freedom art gives you.

In India, we are fortunate to have access to a wide range of art supplies that are both reliable and affordable. Brands such as Scholar, Anupam, Brustro, and Menorah offer excellent art journals, sketchbooks, and mixed media sheets in different sizes. These are popular with beginners as well as seasoned artists, making it easy to find the right tools. The quality of these supplies can truly improve your experience, encouraging you to keep drawing and painting day after day.

Making time for art does not require a studio or expensive materials. All you need is a sketchbook, a pen, and the willingness to observe. Every page becomes a record of your thoughts, moods, and growth. Over weeks and months, you will notice how your lines become more confident, how your use of colour becomes bolder, and how your way of seeing the world changes.

So if you have ever thought about drawing or painting, there is no better time to begin than today. Pick up a sketchbook, start with a small sketch, and allow yourself to enjoy the process. You will soon discover that it brings more than just pictures on paper. It brings peace, focus, and joy.

Do you already practice it?

Choose your sketchbook, find a quiet corner, and make your first mark. You do not need perfection, only the courage to begin.
