The MiG-21 has flown across Indian skies for more than six decades. Sleek, agile, and dependable, it became more than just an aircraft; it became a symbol of courage and resilience. On 25th September 2025, the Indian Air Force officially closes this legendary chapter at Chandigarh, bidding farewell to the iconic fighter that served generations of pilots.
This painting, “Triumph in Tricolour”, is my personal salute to that legacy. Painted in acrylics on canvas, it captures the MiG-21 in flight, proud, sharp, and timeless. I chose to depict it in the striking livery of No. 15 Squadron the “Flying Lances”, a unit with its own storied history, from Spitfires to Gnats, and later, the supersonic MiG-21. Their unique markings brought a sense of individuality to this supersonic jet, and I wanted to preserve that lesser-seen livery in this tribute. The tail number C2113 anchors the painting in authenticity, while the Indian Air Force roundel and squadron impression pay homage to its service.
For the backdrop, I avoided heavy drama and chose something quieter, almost poetic, subtle sand tones with hints of military structures and an airfield, grounding the MiG-21 in its operational world without overpowering it. A smaller MiG-21 banking into a climb accompanies the main subject, echoing both movement and memory.
From a distance, the painting feels photographic, detailed enough to honour the aircraft, yet impressionistic enough to remain art. It is not just a painting of a jet, but of an era, a farewell, and a celebration of flight in tricolour.
